Ilha Grande, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, is a paradise of more than 100 beaches, waterfalls and forest trails. The best base for exploring on foot is Vila do Abraão, the island's main village. Here are the must-do hikes you can start right from the village — and what to expect from each.
Circuito do Abraão (easy, ~1 hour)
A short, easy loop starting at Abraão beach that packs in the island's history and nature: Praia Preta (a dark-sand beach shaped by ancient volcanic activity), the Poção natural pool, the 1896 stone Aqueduct, and the ruins of the Lazareto — an old hospital that later served as a quarantine station and prison. Perfect for a first afternoon on the island.
Trail to Lopes Mendes (moderate, half-day)
The island's most famous hike leads to Lopes Mendes, regularly voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Take a short boat to Pouso, then hike about 30–40 minutes through the forest to the beach. Bring water and sun protection — there's little shade on the sand. It's the highlight of the Lopes Mendes tour.
Pico do Papagaio (hard, full-day)
For the fittest hikers, the climb to the Pico do Papagaio — the island's iconic peak — rewards you with a 360° view over the bay and islands. Most people start before dawn to catch the sunrise. It's a demanding trail; a local guide is recommended.
Cachoeira da Feiticeira (moderate, ~1.5 hours each way)
A rewarding walk from Vila do Abraão to the Feiticeira Waterfall, which drops about 15 meters into a natural pool of crystal-clear water. You can extend it down to Praia da Feiticeira for a swim.
Dois Rios (moderate)
A cross-island trail to Dois Rios, a quiet ocean-side beach and home to the ruins of an old prison colony — a fascinating, off-the-beaten-path corner of Ilha Grande.
Tips before you hike
Wear proper shoes, carry water and snacks (there are few shops on the trails), use repellent and sunscreen, and start early. Some trails are best done with a guide.
